Traditional Catalan cuisine and wine in an ancient Roman city by the sea

Tarragona is port city located in the northeast of Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea and in the Catalonia region. The everlastingly sunny port city is a charming mix of Mediterranean beach life with Roman history and medieval alleyways. Considered Spain's second-most important Roman site, Tarragona has a wealth of ruins, including a seaside amphitheater, and the town’s medieval heart with a maze of narrow cobbled streets. A dynamic eating and drinking scene makes for an enticing and interesting visit.

On the Costa Daurada, it offers Roman ruins and an important legacy of monuments amid extensive beaches. It also has a lot to offer to foodies, as you can find exuberant nature, history and heritage, as well as exceptional wine, olive oil and delightful Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant scene of Tarragona is varied with an emphasis on seafood complemented with a wealth of wines from nearby regions such as Priorat, Penedes, Terra Alta and Tarragona itself.

The Old City is one of the best choices for tapas. The typical menu features classics like anchovies on tomato bread, paired with great wine.

Anyone visiting the region must try the roasted calçots (a local variety of spring onion) served with romesco sauce made using local hazelnuts and olive oil. There are also delicious stews to be tried, as well as xató, and rossejat de fideus among other delightful dishes. The quality of the wine in the area is also amazing. With six denominations of origin including Cava, Montsant and Priorat, it is an excellent destination for wine lovers.

In addition to a great gastronomic offer and the restaurants and tapas bars in the lovely historic district, some of them with ancient walls incorporated into their design, there are others scattered throughout Eixample, the city’s modern neighborhood, and also a cluster of seafood spots at the fishing port, El Serrallo. You can be certain, that after checking out Tarragona you will be pleasantly surprised with a great cultural and gastronomic offer in a not so well known little gem very close to Barcelona.
